Include an introduction that introduces the author and the essay you have chosen. This first paragraph should provide the author's full name and credentials and the essay's title. In addition, you should provide general background about the topic of the essay (not a formal summary) and create a thesis statement that shows how you interpret the essay's main idea. After the introduction, write a one-paragraph summary of the essay. See pages 83-85. After the summary, write a one-paragraph analysis of the essay, specifically referring to the strategies (rhetorical modes/patterns of development, organizational pattern, or other writing strategies) the author uses to convey information and explaining whether or not those strategies are successful. See the list on page 95--you will do one of the last two tasks--"Explain how the author achieves a particular effect" or "Analyze the overall effectiveness of a text." Use at least one direct quotation in this paragraph. Then, include a one or two paragraph personal example (rhetorical mode=illustration) that shows whether your experience aligns with the author's. Have you encountered a situation that would show that the United States is a multinational society? What effect did a scary movie have on you as a child and as an adult? Make sure to explain how this example relates to the essay and whether or not it further proves the author's thesis. At the end, conclude the essay in one paragraph by reflecting on what you have learned from the author and by providing a final note about the significance of the essay. Important Note: Although this essay requires a personal point-of-view, you should not use first person ("I," "me," "my," etc.) in the formal parts of the essay--sections 1, 2, and 2. Do not use second person ("you") in this essay. Audience: Address the essay to people like your classmates who have read and understood the essay but do not know about your personal example. Technical Requirements: Design your document in MLA format. Write 4-6 pages (not including the Works Cited page). Include a Works Cited page as the last page in your paper—the works Cited page will only contain the essay you have chosen. Do not use other outside research in this essay. Objectives: 1) Demonstrate your understanding of an essay by successfully summarizing it. 2) Demonstrate your ability to analyze an essay. 2) Demonstrate your understanding of MLA Documentation guidelines by using them in summary and analysis and by creating a Works Cited page. 3) Understand and apply organization strategies, including topic sentences and transitions. 4) Understand and apply Standard American English and a college-level writing style.
